Five steps how to volunteer abroad
Doing good benefits everyone but often we don't know where to start. We have put together a five step process to get you on your way to fulfilling your volunteering dream.
1. Pick your destination:
Always choose an area that fascinates you. Every individual has different interests so think clearly where you would like to help. For example, if your passion is helping animals, look look into animal shelters. If you are conscious about supporting children, look for a program that can help build an orphanage. There is a wealth of programmes all over the world, make sure it works for you.
2. Check your schedule
Seems sensible right? Once you've decided where you want to focus, you need to think how long you have available and when you would like to begin. There are once in a lifetime placements available, there are week long options or there are minimum monthly placements. Know how much time you can commit before contacting organisations, or else you might overextend yourself.
3. Contact different organisations
Never feel obliged to stick to familiar areas. Volunteering is an excellent way to learn new skills for free, as well as seeing the world. You can learn to build a well with Charity Water or learn to roof a house with Habitat for Humanity. Regardless of what it is, there are opportunities for everyone. Also, speak to your friends or local community, you will be surprised at how many people have experienced different opportunities dotted across the globe - ask around!
4. Make sure you have the right documents
Depending on where you’re travelling, you may need different types of documents. A passport might not always be enough to cover your stay. Many Countries require specific visas which are to be obtained before you enter the country and it is always important to keep these on you at all times. As always it's better to be safe than sorry and if you need local assistance, you’ll likely need some kind of personal information with you.
5. Enjoy the experience
On embarking on such an adventure, you will undoubtedly be part of powerful and meaningful change - but this does not mean you should not be enjoying it too. You will meet new people, learn new skills and potentially visit somewhere you never thought possible, all while giving back to those in need. What a fantastic achievement - enjoy every second!
